A Disappointing End to Utah’s Season

In a must win game against the Grizzlies tonight, the Utah Jazz shot 32% from the field. They came out flat and missed a lot of simple shots. Although they were playing a pretty good team, one still would have expected them to play better than they did. Credit must be given to the Grizzlies though, since they do have one of the better defenses in the NBA.

Derrick Favors contributed to the poor shooting tonight, going 2-9 from the field and scoring 4 points. Although he shot poorly tonight, he was still able to help the team by gathering 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. There’s a lot of promise in his game and he has the potential to be an all star when given the playing time. The Jazz’s season is now over and the team will have to make some decisions on Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap during free agency.

ESPN’s NBA Doubleheader

Tonight is the final night of the regular season in the NBA and there is still one spot left in the Western Conference playoffs. The Lakers and Jazz have been battling for it for the last couple of weeks, and it all comes down to tonight’s double header.  Continue reading

Tomorrow Night Will Determine the West’s 8th Seed

The Utah Jazz won last night, keeping their playoff hopes alive. They were able to take care of the Timberwolves on the road, and now have to travel to Memphis tomorrow night. In order to make the playoffs, they need a win against the Grizzlies and a Lakers loss against the Rockets. Fortunately for the Jazz, the Grizzlies have clinched the 5 spot in the West while the Rockets are still fighting for the 6th seed with the Warriors. The Rockets will still be playing hard and would love to knock the Lakers out of the playoffs. Continue reading

Kobe’s Injury Helps the Jazz

The Lakers were playing well heading down the stretch, winning their last three games and taking control of the 8th seed in the West. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles tendon on Friday night against the Warriors. He will be out for the next 6-9 months and will miss the start of next season as well. Good Night for Jackets in the NBA

Chris Bosh put in a solid night’s work with a 17 point, 7 rebound night in a victory over the Celtics. Miami continues its spectacular form over the second half of the season as they cruise to the playoffs as the top seed out of the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the loss for the Celtics all but cements them into the seventh seed for the playoffs.

Iman Shumpert contributed 36 solid minutes in an effort against the Cavs. The Knicks, who were carried by 31 point efforts from both Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith, took care of business against the Cavs winning by a score of 101-91. While only scoring 8 points in his 36 minutes of play, Shumpert proved he could contribute in other ways. Shumpert pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, and recorded both a block and a steal. While the Knicks are in good shape to secure the 2 seed out of the East, they have a crucial game on Sunday which could decide the tiebreaker between the Knicks and the lurking Pacers, who will travel to Madison Square Garden.

Derrick Favors, much like Iman Shumpert, put in 31 gritty minutes in a 107-100 victory for the Jazz over the Kevin Love-less Timberwolves. Though not bedazzling the fans with an abundance of points (he scored only 6), Favors earned every minute off the bench by contributing 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. The Jazz fed off of his energy tonight, evidenced by Favors’s team high +16 point differential. The Jazz came through in a must win matchup as they continue to chase the Lakers for the 8th seed in the Western Conference. The Jazz will get the chance to continue their push when they play the second game of their home and home mini-series with the Timberwolves on Monday.

Thaddeus Young was the top performer for the Philadelphia 76ers in a 97-86 win over the Wizards. Young’s 18 point, 13 rebound double-double effort certainly played a large part in the victory. Young also pickpocketed 4 steals for the 76ers, who are playing for pride at this point. Despite sitting in the 9th seed in the east, they will be unable to catch the 8th seeded Bucks.

Also notching a double-double was Will Bynum of the Detroit Pistons. In an easy 20 point victory of the lowly Bobcats, Bynum was one of 6 Pistons in double figures. Bynum added 10 assists on the night, as well as 3 boards and a steal.

Jarrett Jack and the Golden State Warriors are trying to do a favor for Favors and the Jazz. The Warriors are currently up by 5 in a tight affair with the Lakers towards the end third quarter. In 13 minutes off the bench so far, Jack has added 5 rebounds, 4 points, and 4 assists. Golden State is fighting only for seeding, as a win would solidify them in the 6th seed out west. A loss for the Lakers would put them level with the Jazz, which means they would miss out on the playoffs.

Anthony Morrow went unused in an overtime victory for the Mavericks. Despite the win, the Mavericks are out of contention for the 8th seed in the Western Conference, as they do not hold the tiebreaker over either of their 8th seed competitors, the Jazz or Lakers.

NBA Nightly Update 4/9/13

Derrick Favors- The Jazz had a big game last night against the Thunder, but were unable to get the win. Favors came off the bench like usual and had 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The 5 blocks were a good sign, but he is going to have to score more in the last three games since he is now the first man off the bench. No one else on Utah’s bench has been as consistent as Favors and the Jazz need that. The Lakers won last night against the Hornets like expected, which means they are now a half game ahead of the Jazz. Again though, the Jazz have two easy games against the Timberwolves and a matchup with the Grizzlies left and have a chance to win all three.

Jarrett Jack- Jack had a quiet game last night in the Warrior’s win over the Timberwolves, only scoring 4 points with 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 23 minutes. The Warriors are in the playoffs, but they may slide into the 7th spot since the Rockets are playing so well. I think both team would like to avoid Durant and the Thunder, so hopefully they can put together a couple more wins down the stretch.

Iman Shumpert- Shumpert had another big offensive game yesterday against the Wizards, scoring 18 points with 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 24 minutes. He also made 4 threes in the game and seems to be heating up. The entire Knicks team made 20 threes last night, so they are passing the ball around and getting everyone open looks. This fast past style benefits Shumpert’s game and should give them a chance against the Heat in the playoffs. The Knicks have also won 13 in a row, so we’ll start keeping track of that as well.

Thaddeus Young- In the 76er’s blowout loss against the Nets, Young had a rough shooting night. He only went 1-9 from the field and scored 3 points. Everyone is bound to have a rough night every now and then, but the 76ers can’t win if he isn’t playing well. What’s even more surprising is his lack of rebounds as well. In his 25 minutes of action, he only grabbed 3 rebounds, which is well below his average. He just had a bad night and will try to erase it from his memory.

Will Utah Make The Playoffs?

The NBA playoff race is coming down to the wire and the Jazz are in a two team race for the 8th spot in the West. They play the Thunder at home on Tuesday and then play back to back games against the struggling Timberwolves. Their final game of the season is against a Grizzlies team who has already clinched the 5 seed in the West, which means that won’t be entirely motivated to play. Looking at Utah’s schedule, they should be able to finish with a 3-1 record and 2-2 at worst.

NBA Nightly Update 4/7/13

Will Bynum- Bynum made his return from his injury tonight and played quite well. In his 17 minutes of play, he had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 5 assists. That’s not too bad for a guy who’s missed a couple of weeks of game action. The Pistons managed to get an impressive win over the Bulls tonight, but it’s too bad they weren’t able to do this more often during the season.

Derrick Favors- Favors played 30 minutes tonight for the Jazz in a huge game against the Warriors. Faovrs recorded 12 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the win tonight. The Jazz are in a tight race with the Lakers and this win gave them a 1/2 game lead over them for the 8th spot. The Jazz have four games left with two of them against the Timberwolves, which means their chances are looking good at making the playoffs.

Jarrett Jack- Although the Warriors haven’t technically clinched a playoff spot yet, there is almost no chance of them missing out on the postseason. They lost to the Jazz tonight, but they still hold down the 6th spot in the West. Jack had a decent game tonight, scoring 7 points with 2 rebounds and 6 assists. They should be fine, but are looking at a tough matchup against the Nuggets or Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.

Iman Shumpert- Shumpert only played 11 minutes in today’s game and didn’t score a point. He managed to record 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal, which isn’t very encouraging. He only played 11 minutes in a playoff style game, which means the Knicks may lean to others when the playoffs start. They have veterans like Kidd, Smith, and Felton on the roster, which means Shumpert may see a reduced role.

NBA Nightly Update 4/4/13

Derrick Favors- The Jazz lost at home tonight against the Nuggets and the loss drops them into the 9th spot in the West. Favors had a decent night with 8 points and 6 rebounds, but they need to play better than that if they want to make the playoffs. If they can win 4 of their  last 6 games (three of which are against the Hornets and Timberwolves), I like their chances of making the playoffs.

Jarrett Jack- The Warriors are still trying to secure the 6th spot in the West, so their win tonight against the Hornets was big. Jarrett Jack had an equally big performance off the bench, shooting 8-11 for 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 8 assists. When he plays well they usually win, and tonight was no different. He seems to be getting hot heading into the playoffs, which is good news for the Warriors.

Iman Shumpert- The Hawks were unable to stop Carmelo Anthony as he continued his hot shooting. Shumpert didn’t have a great night, but it made no difference. He finished with a stat line of 4 points and 6 rebounds and was unable to really have an impact on the game.

Thaddeus Young- The 76ers managed to lose on the road at the Bobcats tonight. Young had a poor shooting night, going 2-9 from the field and only scoring 6 points. He added 7 rebounds and 3 steals, but he was bound to have an off performance eventually. The real story of the night was Jrue Holiday’s historically bad shooting performance. He went 2-24 from the field and single handedly lost the game for the 76ers.

NBA Nightly Update 4/1/13

Derrick Favors- The Jazz had a huge home win tonight against the Trailblazers thanks in large part to Favors’ contribution off the bench. He had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists, which was needed since no one else on the bench was helpful tonight. The Jazz now have a half game lead on the Lakers for the 8th spot in the West and are starting to heat up at the right time.
