Castro Collapses in Second Round of the TPC

Roberto Castro is a young golfer and has not had much experience on the Tour, so reality was bound to set in at some point. Although most expected him to drop in the standings, I don’t think anyone saw a +6 round coming after such an impressive performance yesterday. In today’s round, Castro recorded a birdie, 5 bogeys and a double bogey to end at -3 through the tournament so far. He easily made the cut, but he has to forget today’s meltdown and show up tomorrow with the same mentality he had on Thursday. Continue reading

First Round Results From the TPC

The Players Championship started this week, which means almost all of Tech’s former golfers will be competing in the field. Some players came out strong today, posting scores under par, while others really struggled. Nick Thompson was able to finish with a -3 on the day and both Matt Kuchar and Cameron Tringale are one shot behind him at -2. Continue reading

RBC Heritage Second Round Update

Stewart Cink had the best day out of everyone, going -2 on the round with 3 birdies and a bogey. He’s now at -3 on the tournament and sits 3 shots back of the leader. Thompson, Matteson, and Kuchar are all at -1, E, and +1 respectively and made the cut. It’s somewhat surprising that Kuchar went +2 on the day after he had such a great Masters, but hopefully he can put together a nice weekend and stay hot.

Both Molder and Castro missed the cut (cut was +1) at +4 and +8 respectively. Molder had some nice holes, but had a bad bogey run halfway through his round that ruined his day. Castro on the other hand was off from the beginning of the round and just had a rough tournament.

RBC Heritage First Round Update and Second Round Tee Times

The first round of the RBC Heritage is over and there were mixed results for Georgia Tech’s pros. Stewart Cink made 4 birdies, but also bogeyed 3 holes to end at -1 on the day. Kuchar had a less eventful day, parring 15 holes and also ending at -1. Nick Thompson had the most surprising day out of the 6 golfers by positing going -1 as well. He did a great job of battling back after bogeys and staying under par.  Continue reading

RBC Heritage Tournament Begins Tomorrow

Now that the Masters is over and the golf world has quieted down, there is a two month wait until the next major tournament. During that gap, there are quite a few smaller tournaments to fill the schedule, excluding the TPC. Therefore, Tech fans will get the chance to see all of GT’s former golfers in tournaments like this weeks RBC Heritage Tournament.

Valero Texas Open Final Round Update

Update: Molder and Kuchar finished at -3 on the tournament. Both golfers played really well today and Kuchar had a strong finish. Thompson and Matteson are both almost done with their rounds and sit at +2. They both had solid outings, but showed inconsistencies in their day to day play.

Update: Molder still sits at -3 and is almost done for the day. Kuchar has dropped back to -1 while Thompson has dropped to +2. Matteson has registered 3 birdies since his early bogey and is -2 on the day and +1 for the tournament.

The final round of the Valero Texas Open is underway and there are a couple golfers posting low scores. Bryce Molder has by far the best round going, however, as he is -4 on the day and at -3 on the tournament. He is now tied for 14th and has a chance to get into the top 10. Kuchar is -1 today and is a stroke back on Molder. Both players are playing well right now and are looking to finish the tournament towards the top of the leader board.

Both Thompson and Matteson are +1 so far today and they are currently at E and +4 respectively. Matteson is trying to hold his tournament together while Thompson still has a chance to crack the top 20. Come back and check out the updates later in the day.

Valero Texas Open 3rd Round Update

Today was a very unexciting day at the Valero Texas Open as much of the field went over par. Thankfully Jim Furyk, Rory McIlroy, and Padraig Harrington provide some name recognition to a leaderboard that would otherwise be dull. Although Kuchar hasn’t had the tournament he was probably expecting, he still sits at -1 with Nicholas Thompson and tied for 19th (9 back of the leader though). Both golfers went -1 on the day and had Kuchar not double bogeyed the final hole, he might still be in contention.

Bryce Molder had a rough day today, going +3 and ending at +1 so far in the tournament. A nice day tomorrow will get him back into the Top 25 and round out a successful tournament for him. The last player still alive is Troy Matteson, who went +2 on the day and finished at +3. He started the day off with a double bogey but fought back to go even the rest of the day. The same situation happened last week to Matteson, which means he needs to focus harder at the start of his rounds.

Tournament coverage will start on the Golf Channel, but will switch over to NBC at 3 P.M. If McIlroy or Furyk can make a run, this should be an exciting finish. It will also be interesting to see if Billy Horschel can finish this weekend with a win, something he wasn’t able to do last weekend. Kuchar still has a chance to gain some ground on the leaders, but at this point he’s just getting practice in for the Masters.

Valero Texas Open 2nd Round Update

The second round of the Valero Texas Open is a little over halfway through, which means some former Tech golfers have already finished their days. Bryce Molder had a difficult day (+2), but still sits at -2 and within 4 strokes of the lead. Thompson faired a little better with a +1, but he now sits at E on the day. Although Troy Matteson sits at +1, he went -3 on the day and put himself in position to make the cut. The projected cut is +1, so he looks like he’s in good shape.

Kuchar has played 4 holes, but is at +2 for the tournament, so he’ll have to start making some birdies to get back into the hunt. Castro, Duval, and Tringale are all well off the lead, sitting at +6, +7, and +7 respectively. Barring a huge day from one of them, they will all miss the cut and go home early. I’ll post all four of their final scores when they finish and let you know if they made the cut.

Valero Texas Open First Round Updates

Update: The first round of the tournament is over and two players have finished under par.  Thompson finished at -1 and Molder finished at -4 and 1 shot back of the league. He was very impressive today with 6 birdies and 2 bogeys. Troy Matteson also finished his day, but finished at +4.

Update: Thompson, Molder, and Matteson are finishing up the first half of their rounds are currently sit at -2, -1, and +2 respectively. The co-leaders are at -4 and have finished their days, so Thompson and Molder have a chance to gain another couple strokes heading into the back nine.

Update: What started as a promising day has turned into somewhat of a disappointment so far. Kuchar is on the 18th and sits at +2. Tringale, Castro, and Duval have all finished and are at +5, +7, and +7 respectively. There are a lot of high numbers on the course today though, so they all have a chance to come back with a better round tomorrow. The afternoon tee times are preparing to tee off.

Update: Both Kuchar and Tringale are at E on the day, while Duval and Castro have fallen off the pace at +3 and +7 respectively (+7 is still the highest score to par). All four are on the back nine and should be finishing up about the time that Thompson, Matteson, and Molder are starting.

The first round of the Valero Texas Open has begun and a few golfers are already on the course. Matt Kuchar is E through 3 holes, while David Duval and Cameron Tringale are both at +1. Roberto Castro is currently at +3 (the highest score on the course so far) and he just needs to find a groove heading into the back nine.

Thompson, Matteson, and Molder were all given afternoon tee times, and start their rounds at 1:30, 1:40, and 1:50 ET respectively. Some golfers have started off the day well and are under par, so these three will need to come out strong today. I’ll post updates every so often to let you know how they’re playing!
